What Causes Missed Periods?
Puberty kicks in during the ages of eight to 13 with changes in the human body. For women, it is the development of the chest, the rounding out of the hips, and the onset of the menstrual cycle in preparation for pregnancy and childbirth later on in life. The menstrual cycle is also known as a monthly period for on average it usually takes place every 28 days. It involves the thickening of the uterus lining and the release of an egg from the ovaries into the uterus. Should a sperm fertilize the released egg during intercourse a woman would become pregnant, but the released egg would be flushed out of the body with the uterus lining if it does not become fertilized within a specific time frame. The exit of the uterus lining and the unfertilized egg from the body through bleeding for about four to six days is the menstrual cycle or the monthly period.
Some women experience missed periods due to pregnancy or other factors. Missed periods because of pregnancy are normal, as the body would program the ovaries would not release any more eggs for fertilization until sometime after the delivery of the child. For women who are not pregnant, missed periods could be cause for concern. Missed periods are common during the onset of menstruation and prior to the menopause or the end of one’s reproductive years. Getting your period within a 21 to 42 day range is not the same as missed periods as some women may just have irregular menstrual cycles. Missed periods though are a symptom that something is affecting your hormones.
A few common causes of missed periods include illness, travel, the use of contraceptives, emotional stress, a more strenuous exercise regimen, changes in eating habits, or rapid weight gain or loss. Should you make changes in your lifestyle your period could be on track during the next cycle. Should you experience more missed periods after making significant adjustments, it would be best to see your doctor at the soonest possible time.
